What Heirloom does with a portrait. The face is kept exactly as photographed and painted in warm, blended tones with no smoothing; the boldest strokes go into hair, cloth and the lit cheek. It is the style people choose for a portrait that has to hang beside the grandparents'.
The photo. Daylight, eyes visible, the face filling a good part of the frame. Older, scanned or slightly blurred photos usually work at 8×10 to 16×24. We never smooth, slim or retouch a face.
The size. 16×24 in a hallway; 24×36 for a single face over a console table or a mantel.
