What Heirloom does with a dog. The coat is painted in warm, blended strokes with thick paint only where a painter would load the brush — the eyes, the wet nose, the lit side of the face — so the markings stay exactly where they are and the surroundings soften into a painted room.
The photo. Daylight, eyes in focus, taken at the dog's own eye level rather than from above. A three-quarter view paints better than straight on. For a black dog, skip the flash — the raised highlights do the work.
The size. 16×20 in a hallway or beside a bookshelf; 24×36 above the sofa. Big dogs look right big.
