A dog portrait in the Watercolor style
Transparent washes, soft blooms and bare white paper for the light — a watercolor painting of your photo, printed on canvas, from $69.

What Watercolor does with a dog. The coat is laid in transparent washes, with the paper left bare for the lightest fur and the catchlight in the eye. Edges soften where a wet wash would run, and a busy background melts into a pale ground, so the face is what you see. The markings stay exactly where they are.
The photo. Daylight, eyes in focus, taken at the dog's own eye level rather than from above. A three-quarter view paints better than straight on. For a black dog, skip the flash — the highlights do the work.
The size. 16×20 in a hallway or beside a bookshelf; 24×36 above the sofa. Big dogs look right big.
