What Palette Knife does with a horse. The head is built from flat, ridged planes of colour laid on with a knife — the most texture of the six. Clear shapes win: a dog's head, a horse in profile. Fine detail is deliberately simplified; the markings are kept.
The photo. Side-on or three-quarter in daylight with the ears forward, and include the neck — a head-only crop paints small. Tack on or off, as you like it.
The size. 24×36 or 36×48. Horses want height as well as width; a horizontal photo turns the sizes on their side.
